tattoo aftercare
After getting a tattoo, proper aftercare is crucial for healing and maintaining its appearance. Healing time depends on each individual and their environment, and it can take around 3-5 weeks.

immediately after tattoo
Your tattoo may feel sore, swollen, or red.
Leave the Bandage On
Keep the bandage or wrap applied by your artist on for 3-24 hours.
If you are using using second skin/saniderm, leave on for up to 3 days. Do not leave second skin/saniderm on for more than 4 days at a time.
days 3-30
Scabbing and flaking may begin. The tattoo may feel itchy.
Remove the Bandage, Wash Gently and Pat Dry
After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap (like Dr Bronner's castile soap or Dial anti bacterial soap). Avoid using hot water or scrubbing the tattoo. Use clean hands (not a washcloth or sponge) to wash the area. After washing, pat the tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel or let it air dry. Do not rub the tattoo.
Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment or lotion
Once dry, apply a thin layer of unscented healing ointment (like Aquaphor or a specialized tattoo balm). Use only enough to lightly moisturize the tattoo. Avoid thick layers of ointment, as this can suffocate the skin and delay healing.
Moisturize Regularly
After the first few days, switch from ointment to a fragrance-free moisturizer (like a lotion made for sensitive skin). Apply it lightly 2-3 times a day to prevent the tattoo from drying out.
Avoid Picking or Scratching
As your tattoo heals, it will scab and peel. Do not pick at scabs or scratch the area, as this can cause scarring and fade the ink. Light itching is normal—moisturizing can help relieve this.
Stay Out of the Sun
Avoid direct sun exposure on your tattoo for at least 2 weeks. After that, always use sunscreen on your tattoo to prevent fading.
Avoid Submerging the Tattoo
Refrain from swimming in pools, hot tubs, oceans, or soaking in baths for at least 2-3 weeks. Showers are fine, but limit the time the tattoo is exposed to water.
Wear Loose Clothing
Wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid friction on the tattooed area. Tight clothing can rub against the fresh tattoo and cause irritation or delay healing.
Watch for Infection
Mild redness, swelling, or discomfort is normal for a few days. However, if you notice signs of infection (excessive redness, pus, fever, or intense pain), contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
Most peeling will have finished in 2-4 weeks. The skin may still be a little shiny or slightly bumpy.
after 4-6 weeks
The tattoo should be fully healed.
Keep your tattoo moisturized and protected from the sun, even after it heals, to preserve its vibrancy.
